The starfruit is a native of southeast Asia. When sliced, the cross-section is shaped like a 5-pointed star. The skin is waxy and green, turning yellow as the fruit ripens. The outer edge of each ridge is bitter, and should be removed before eating. The central pith and seeds should also be removed.

When fully ripe, the fruit remains firm. Soft fruits are past their prime. The fruit is tart in flavor, and can be sweetened with a little sugar.
